San Ramon, CA : A Livermore man was killed when his car hit a construction crane on I-680 nearing Bollinger Canyon Road on Thursday, April 28, 2016

According to the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office, a Livermore man was killed Thursday when his car slammed into a construction crane on the southbound side of Interstate 680 in San Ramon at 11:25pm on Thursday.

The man killed in the car accident was later identified as 43 year-old Carlos Garcia-Zepeda.

The police commented that the construction crane was being utilized to convert some carpool lanes to express lanes from San Ramon to Walnut Creek.

Right before the accident occurred, the crane was driven on to the freeway and moved all the way to the tight hand land where it was traveling at 55 mph when it was rear-ended by the Honda being driven by Garcia-Zepeda.

According to officials, the driver was killed immediately on impact of the crane.

Soon after Garcia-Zepeda’s car hit the crane, a second car that was behind the Honda slammed into the first car. That driver was taken to the hospital to have the injuries analyzed.

The southbound lanes were closed by the California Highway Patrol until the accident was cleared. A Sig-alert was later issued and all southbound lanes reopened shortly after 6am to traffic that was backed up.
