An accident involving a collision between a small car and a big rig truck slowed traffic to a halt on Interstate 880 in Union City. The accident occurred at 4 p.m. on April 20 on a highway ramp. The five passenger car ran into the back of a trailer tractor that was experiencing mechanical difficulties that had caused the tractor to stall. This collision caused injuries to both drivers and created massive debris which was spread throughout the highway.

The collision between the small car and the big rig also caused other traffic accidents to occur. The driver of the big rig had contacted a towing company to help with his stalled vehicle. On the way to the scene, the tow truck that was coming to assist the big rig struck another vehicle near the first accident. After the second accident, authorities closed several lanes of traffic, causing significant traffic delays and frustrated drivers. Although the closing of the highway caused delays, it allowed authorities and medical officials to appropriately access the situation. The victims of the accidents were transported to local hospitals and the debris was slowly removed from the highway. The debris covered at least four lanes of the highway and was partially responsible for the decision to close many lanes of traffic in an effort to remove it and avoid more collisions.
