Five teenagers were killed in a fiery car crash in Irvine on Oct. 5, according to the California Highway Patrol. They were reportedly returning from Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park.
Police said an unlicensed 16-year-old boy was driving a BMW sedan on Interstate 5 around 2:15 a.m. when the car veered off the road, rolled over and burst into flames. His passengers, two teen girls and three teen boys, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver suffered a head injury and underwent surgery at Mission Hospital. CHP officials said three of the victims were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
The names of the deceased have not been released, but authorities said the male victims played for the elite Mission Viejo Soccer Club.
Police said they did not yet know why the driver lost control of the BMW.
