A fiery multiple-car crash on 580, near Pleasanton, leaves one man dead.

Around 6:00 a.m. the driver of a BMW slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler and caught fire. The man died after becoming trapped inside the car. The chain reaction also caused other vehicles to catch fire. No other serious injuries or deaths were reported.

California Highway Patrol responded to a crash alert about 6:05 a.m.

The rig ran into the back of the BMW, which caused a chain reaction pileup, according to police reports. Another vehicle caught fire, but the driver was able to escape.

The driver of the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency personnel had to cut him from the vehicle, according to CHP Spokesperson Tyler Hahn.

The man’s identity has not been revealed pending notification of next of kin.

All three lanes were blocked, and traffic was at a standstill for three hours. Westbound traffic was backed up to the Livermore exit.

“Traffic was flowing freely around 9:07 a.m.” according to Hahn.
