The routine of afternoon commuting took a deadly turn in Cararillo Thursday when a motorcycle collided with a Metrolink rail train. The California Highway Patrol has now released the names of the driver and his passenger.
The driver, who is hospitalized in critical condition, was identified as Garrett Vongunten, age 20. he is a resident of Camarillo. The CHP says he is under arrest. Drugs may have played a role in causing the accident. The second person on the motorcycle was 23 year old Nadya Unger, also a resident of Camarillo. She was thrown from the motorcycle and did not survive.
As the CHP spokesperson describes the accident, Vongunten failed to stop and wait for the oncoming Metrokink commuter rail cars. The reason why he kept going is being investigated. He slammed directly into the side of one car. Both he and his passenger were thrown from the motorcycle. The Metrolink car that was struck was also carrying passengers. However, there were no injuries among the people on board the train, according to the CHP.
