Multiple lanes were shut down just outside of Lake Arrowhead after a fatal motorcycle accident occurred on Highway 18.

The crash happened around 11:30 am on March 4th. According to officers, a motorcyclist crossed the center line separating northbound and southbound traffic. The lanes were only separated by the center line; no concrete dividers were in place at the scene of the accident. The victim then struck a car head-on, killing him. After the crash, the motorcycle burst into flames on the side of the road, according to first response personnel.

The lanes were closed for about an hour while firefighters extinguished the blaze and law enforcement officers checked the scene, leaving traffic congested around the mountain-rich area surrounding the highway. Around 12:30, all lanes were reopened. Law enforcement officers would not release the name of the victim until next of kin were notified, to prevent the family from finding out second-hand through media reports. In California, motorcycle deaths had spiked by 8.2% during the first quarter of 2015, the last time data has been available.
