When completed, the Wilshire Grand Center in downtown LA will be the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. Not unlike many skyscrapers in the past, this 73-story building has already claimed the life of a construction worker.
The man, an electrician and employee of ASSI Security, fell from the 53rd floor at around 12:08 PM. This is a height of more than 800 feet. His body struck the rear portion of a car driving on Wilshire Boulevard.
The victim’s employer, ASSI Security of Irvine, CA did not comment on the accident, but a representative of Turner Construction Co. briefed the local media. Turner Construction Co. is one of the prominent contracting firms overseeing the Wilshire Grand Center project.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the worker’s family…we will do everything we can to understand what happened here today, and prevent it from happening again.”
According to Turner Construction Co. the worker who lost his life in the fall had only recently joined the team working on the tower. It was only his second day on the job.
LA police pronounced the man dead at the scene. An investigation into the reason behind the fall is being launched. The fall is a mystery considering the conditions under which the man was working. Though the walls of the 53rd floor were unfinished, there was an 8 foot safety barrier around the perimeter.
