On the morning of Tuesday, April 5, 2016 in Studio City, California, 42-year-old Cairo Joseph Castaneda was struck while riding his bicycle. The accident happened during morning rush hour. According to the Los Angeles Daily News, LAPD officer Ricardo Hernandez reported that Castaneda was traveling in the 12000 block of Ventura Place when he approached the intersection of Radford Avenue.
It was at this intersection that Castaneda was struck by a privately owned garbage truck. The crash proved fatal. Castaneda was pronounced dead at 7:50 a.m. on the scene, according to Ed Winter, chief of Operations and Investigations for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Officer Hernandez stated that there was no implication of a crime. No files have been charged at this time. Valley Traffic Division is handling the investigation.
His family stated that Castaneda was on the way to work when the crash happened. His family is seeking help through a GoFundMe page for help with funeral expenses.
Danny Gamboa, leading activist of bicycle safety in the region, stated that there have been 31 fatalities from bicycle accidents in southern California from January to April 2016. He was among a crowd of cyclists that gathered to honor Castaneda and in order to bring more awareness to bicycle safety.
