Modesto, CA – An accident at the Modesto Bear Industrial Complex near Garner and Leckron Roads has left one construction worker dead.
The worker, 52-year-old Jose Mangana of Stockton, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office. The cause of death was not released.
California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) is investigating that Magana was killed after being struck in the head by a beam or another object that fell, according to Cal/OSHA spokesperson Julia Bernstein.
Mangana was employed by the subcontractor Sinclair Concrete. The company declined to comment about the accident.
The 465,580 square foot building constructed by Bear Land Improvement Company is slated to be used as a distribution or manufacturing center.
Because of the death, Bear Land CEO Ron Jackson stopped work temporarily. “This is a tragic event, and our hearts go out to the family,” said Jackson.
Work is scheduled to resume Tuesday morning.
Jackson says he will brief workers about the incident, and safety personnel will address employees on how to prevent such accidents from occurring again.
