At approximately 8:20 pm on March 13, 2016, 71-year-old Douglas Decker was hit by a vehicle in Palm Springs, California. He was pronounced dead at Desert Regional Medical Center two hours later.
Mr. Decker was injured at Arenas Road and Calle El Segundo, as described by Palm Springs police. The car struck him as it was traveling south on Calle El Segundo road. Decker, who was heading east, was rushed to the hospital with major head trauma. The intersection was closed for nearly eight hours.
Although drugs and alcohol were not involved in this incident, it was at least the fifth Coachella Valley pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle in the past year. Other incidents involved the death of 10-year-old Bobby Adams on March 3. He was with a 29-year-old man who sustained major injuries as well when they were hit by a Ford pickup. The driver in that situation stopped immediately and cooperated with police.
In similar incidents during the same time frame, Jose Ramos, 39, died in Desert Hot Springs on January 22; Joseph Ellers, 22, died on Highway 111; and Harry Pedersen, 79, died after being struck on East Palm Canyon Drive.
