Aggressive driving may have played a role in a fatal crash that resulted in five deaths in Sacramento Country according to the California Highway Patrol. The head on crash occurred on a Saturday evening on Highway 12 and resulted in the death of two women, two toddlers, and a local teen.
Three of the five victims have been identified, Aaliyah Buerostro, 17, Mona Montoya, 21, and Adelyanna Ortiz, 3. All of the victims were from Modesto where the teenager attended high school up until she transferred to the Robert Elliot Education Center. School officials stated that grief counselors will be available at both schools Monday.
The crash occurred on Highway 12 close to the Highway 160 intersection to the east of Vista. The five victims were riding in a Honda Civic traveling east when they attempted to pass several cars on the two lane highway. According to the CHP, the driver was not able to get back into the east lane after passing in time. Instead the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a Chevy Silverado traveling westbound. There was a family of four inside of the Silverado.
Four of the victims were declared dead on the scene and the second toddler died while receiving treatment at the hospital. The four people traveling in the Silverado received minor injuries.
