Encinitas – Mother and Son Injured While Crossing Street
Friday, February 12, 2016

An accident on the crosswalk on the way to school left a mother and 4-year old son injured.
The little boy and his mother were struck while crossing the street near Park Dale Lane and Countryhaven Road. At the time, the mother was also holding the hands of her 6-year old son and walking their dog.

A father of a boy at the local school was driving his son and came to a stop at the crosswalk before proceeding. The father did not see the mother and son and it is not clear if the mother and son had safely proceeded to cross the painted crosswalk. The sun might also have impeded the driver’s vision.

The boy was air lifted to the Rady Children’s Hospital and admitted immediately for a skull fracture. He was released one week later. The mother escaped with less serious injuries and only a few abrasions.

Parents at the Encinitas elementary school met with city planners to discuss safety measures for the crosswalk in the future. After the meeting, the City Council appointed representatives to work with the community to ensure the safety of students.
