Richard Freeman Killed in Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident in McKinleyville

McKinleyville, California (April 28, 2018) – The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office has disclosed the identity of a man who was fatally hit by a car in McKinleyville on Thursday night, April 26.

The fatal auto-pedestrian accident occurred at about 9 p.m. on US Highway 101 near the North Bank Road.

The authorities reported that the body of 34-year-old Richard Brandon Freeman, of Hoopa, was found lying in the center divider after being hit by a 2001 Ford van which did not stop at the scene.

Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ford driver, 33-year-old Benjamin Shermis, of Arcata, reportedly surrendered into the California Highway Patrol’s Arcata office and was taken into custody after admitting that he was indeed the driver of the hit-and-run vehicle.
