Annette Burkhart and Gary McCrary Killed in Toll 49 Accident in Smith County

Smith County, Texas (April 15, 2017) – Two people were killed Wednesday night following a three-vehicle crash in Smith County, according to a report by the DPS.

The victims were identified as Annette Burkhart, 56, of Garland and Gary McCrary, 62, of Flint.

The accident took place at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 on Toll 49, just north of Highway 64.

Reportedly, Burkhart’s car was stopped on the southbound side of the road with a flat tire. McCrary’s pickup truck was stopped behind the stalled vehicle and McCrary was helping Burkhart to change the flat tire.

As per the report, a third vehicle, driven by 35-year-old Lindale resident Jessica Vass was southbound, approaching the stopped vehicles. For an unknown reason, Jessica’s car rear-ended the truck and then struck the other car, causing the vehicles to hit McCrary and Burkhart.

The impact of the crash caused Jessica’s car to rollover, coming to rest in the middle of Toll 49.

McCrary died at the scene while Burkhart was taken to Tyler hospital where she died of her injuries.

Jessica Vass was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries. She was treated and released.

No further information regarding the accident was provided. The incident remains under investigation.
