One man was killed early Monday morning when a vehicle in which he was a passenger was struck by a Union Pacific train after the car got stuck on the tracks near Tehachapi. A woman who was driving the car was also injured in the crash.
Just before 3:00 AM, the sedan veered off of Highway 58 near Sand Canyon Road, crashed through a metal barrier and traveled down a steep embankment before coming to a stop on the train tracks. The Union Pacific train was reportedly traveling at a low speed, approximately 25 mph, at the time of the crash. The victim was pinned in the vehicle after the initial accident, at the point of collision with the train.
Kern County officials identified the victim as 22-year-old Eduardo Torres Sanchez, of Bakersfield. California Highway Patrol identified the injured driver as Mayra Leticia Anaya, 24, also of Bakersfield.
California Highway Patrol had not yet determined the cause of the initial highway accident. Union Pacific was pursuing an investigation into the causes of the vehicle-train collision.
