The accident occurred at approximately 3 in the morning and involved a pick up truck and a semi truck at the intersection of East 37th Street and South Santa Fe Avenue.
The Vernon Police Department states that the pick up truck ended up pinned underneath the semi truck after the accident. The passenger of the pick up truck died on the scene and the driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The most shocking part of the case is that the semi truck driver detached his cab from the trailer and left the scene of the accident. The pick up truck was pinned underneath the trailer of the semi truck. In order to flee the scene, the semi truck driver detached his cab from the trailer and left the accident.
Eventually authorities did find the cab a distance away from the accident scene and located a twelve pack of beer near the cab. Two bottles of beer had been consumed already. Police are seeking to speak with Guillermo Ortiz Jr. as a person of interest.
