An accident at the site of new construction, in the Beard Industrial District, claimed the life of a construction work on Friday. The site, at 585 Garner Road, southeast of Modesto, in Stanislaus County, is a 476,000 square-foot building. The building is owned by the Beard Land Improvement Company. When completed the site will be a distribution center/freight terminal.
The deceased worker is identified as Jose Magana, 52, of Stockton, California. Witnesses interviewed by Cal-OSHA, the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health, stated that a falling beam struck Mr. Magana on the head. Paramedics responding to a 911 call pronounced Mr. Magana dead before 9.00 am. The official cause of death is pending a full-scale investigation by Cal-OSHA, and other state and federal agencies.
Magana is a laborer for Sinclair Concrete of Penryn, California. Project General contractor Alston Construction Company of Sacramento, California, sub-contracted Sinclair Concrete for concrete, and masonry work on the site. Alston Construction and Sinclair Concrete refused to comment concerning Mr. Magana’s death.
Ronald Jackson, President, and CEO of the Beard Land Improvement Company said Mr. Magana’s death is a tragedy. He has halted work, and when construction resumes next Tuesday, workers will be informed about construction site safety procedures.
