There are certain hazards that one does not expect to be involved in a vehicle collision. People do not generally expect power lines to be a factor in an automobile accident. But in this early morning five vehicle accident, they were.
Shortly after 7 in the morning, the police responded to a report of a car accident involving a big rig.
The driver of the big rig, which was a dump truck with an addition trailer, was driving southbound on Calistoga Road. The rear trailer veered over the double lines, into oncoming traffic. It was at this point that the trailer crashed into an oncoming sedan. Authorities do not know why the rear trailer shifted in such a way. Possible reasons could include improper installment or a faulty mechanisms.
This caused the dump truck to flip over. The trailed hit a utility pole and caused power lines to collapse into the roadway. Other vehicles were hit by the falling power lines.
Fortunately, only one driver was injured (the driver of the overturned sedan). She was taken the hospital and treated for her moderate injuries.
After the incident, the road was closed for the rest of the day. The authorities needed time to collect the downed power lines and safely install new ones. They needed to ensure the safety of the roadway before allowing entrance.
