One cyclist was injured while on his way back from a memorial service in San Diego. The service was paying tribute to a 13-year-old boy that died in a biking accident.
23-year-old Omar Avila was the victim of this hit-and-run on February 18th. Avila was struck on his bicycle by a white Toyota FJ Cruiser on El Cajon Boulevard. The accident took place just prior to sunset, at 6:30 p.m., as stated by officer Dino Delimitros. At the time of the accident, Avila was on his way home from an event organized for a young boy by the name of Jose Guadalupe Hernandez Dominguez. The event was a memorial, as Dominguez had died in a biking crash just two days ago.
Avila suffered multiple broken ribs, and a laceration to his head. While serious, these injuries are not fatal. Avila will be able to cycle again after a lengthy recovery. The police have not yet identified the driver of the vehicle. The only witness was a friend of Avila, whom was unable to recall specifics of the car or its occupants.
