Man, 36, and Jose Garcia Lopez, 29, Killed in Costa Mesa Fiery Head-On Crash on 405 Freeway

Costa Mesa, California (January 8, 2017) – Two men were killed early Sunday morning in a fiery head-on crash that was triggered by a wrong-way driver in Costa Mesa.

The accident took place at just after 4:00 a.m. between silver 2001 Ford Mustang and a black 2004 Ford SUV on northbound 405 Freeway, just north of Costa Mesa (55) Freeway.

The wrong way driver identified as Jose Garcia Lopez, 29, of Fullerton and the driver of the other vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the authorities, Lopez was driving the Mustang heading south in the northbound lanes of 405 Freeway when he collided head-on with the SUV driven by the 36-year-old man.

According to the CHP, both vehicles burst into flames after the crash.

The name of the second river was not immediately released pending family notification.

The crash is under investigation and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the CHP’s Santa Ana Office at 714-567-6000.
