All southbound lanes of Highway 880 in Hayward were closed early this morning as a result of fatal crash between a motorcyclist and a truck just under the Highway 92 overcross. According the the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported at 6:01 AM. California Highway Patrol Officials have also confirmed that the motorcyclist died in the crash. While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, it was serious enough close all southbound lanes of Highway 880 for over two hours. Lanes did not reopen until 8:40 a.m.
Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the investigation. According to witnesses and authorities, the crash happened because the motorcyclist hit a truck while splitting lanes. Hitting the truck caused the motorcyclist to be thrown from his Harley-Davidson and be hit by a second truck. While no one else was injured in the accident, the motorcyclist did die from his injuries at the scene. California Highway Patrol is not expecting to seek charges for the truck driver.
