Just after midnight on February 27, 2016 a chain reaction accident involving eight vehicles left three dead in Commerce, California. The accident occurred on the 5 just east of Washington Boulevard.

The accident, triggered by street racing, started when one of the two vehicles in the race tried to avoid colliding with a slower moving vehicle and swerved into a UPS 18-wheeler. The impact with the 18-wheeler caused the diesel truck to crash into the center divide.

The impacted 18-wheeler after hitting the center divide went airborne causing it to hit the top of another vehicle taking off the top of the roof. Then the big rig continued until it landed on top of another vehicle where it rested and burst into flames.

The driver of the UPS truck died in the accident as well as the two in the first vehicle the UPS truck impacted taking off the top of the vehicle. The police arrested the driver involved in the street race that caused the accident, but are still looking for the other driver involved in the street race.

The accident caused the freeway to be shut down all night as the fire caused extensive damage to several lanes on the freeway, and to the pavement.
